His credits include such phenomenal box-office successes as Jaws 1975, Close Encounters of the Third Kind 1977, Raiders of the Lost Ark 1981, ET 1982, and Jurassic Park (winner of three Academy Awards) and Schindler's List, based on Thomas Keneally's novel, which won seven Academy Awards, including those for Best Picture and Best Director, 1993. Immensely popular, his films often combine heartfelt sentimentality and a childlike sensibility.
